If I Could Put Ideas in a Bottle

Project Challenge: The Chanel company is in need of concept drawings depicting a bottle style for two new product lines. One line represents a romantic aesthetics, while another represents a trustworthy quality. They have requested multiple points of views of each bottle drawing.

Key Deliverable: Create illustrations for either a “romantic” perfume or a “trustworthy” cologne bottle of your own design. The bottle is to be illustrated using 2-point perspective, in street level, worm’s eye, or a bird’s eye view.

Quickly realizing that I was not cut out for the romantic shapes, I made the call to go the trustworthy route.

The Rough.

When deciding to go with trustworthy as the base for my design, I chose to go with a design on my first page of sketches. I chose this particular bottle because it had a strong shape, simple lines, and funnily enough, I felt like I could sit this bottle down anywhere and trust that it would stand on its own.

Getting Closer.

Deciding on the shape of the bottle was decidedly easier than I had imagined, but what I needed now was a name for a trustworthy cologne. Having some familiarity with the Chanel brand, I decided upon “Noire” which was originally a perfume produced by the company.

“Noir” by Chanel.

The final product. “Noir” by Chanel evokes a few things. The classic shape of the bottle presents a strong shape and a great silhouette. The shape also lends itself completely to being a bottle that can be placed on the most precarious of counters and stand without a chance of failure.

The choice to use a dark bottle with gold lettering was an intentional choice to harken back to the Art Deco movement of the 1920’s, which was introduced in Paris. Bringing these elements together, along with interesting lines and posing it in 2pt. perspective sets it apart from any type of bottle on the shelf.
